Camp Meeting ‘08 – Part 3 – Hospitality Tent & People

HOSPITAL’ITY, n. [L. hospitalitas.] The act or practice of receiving and entertaining strangers or guests without reward, or with kind and generous liberality. ~Webster’s 1828 Dictionary

We are instructed in Romans 12:13b to: “Practice hospitality.” (NIV)

At Camp Meeting, there is a Hospitality Tent for the ministers, their wifes, and families. It is continually stocked with beverages and food and, two nights during Camp Meeting, a dinner is served.

In the four years I have know my Pastor’s wife, I have come to find out many of her awesome qualities and talents, but one stands out like shining gold, and that is HOSPITALITY. I’m not for sure how she came about as being the hospitality tent coordinator last year, but she did such an outstanding job, that she was asked to do it again this year. (She’s already been asked to do it again next year too! :) ). I know a lot has been said about Sis. Ronda Hurst on other blogs, but this is my blog and I want to brag about her some more.

She is, to me, the Queen of Hospitality. Not only at Camp Meeting, but at committee dinners, Christmas banquets, family gatherings, etc. Well, she is obeying the Word of God by doing so and I’m sure God is very pleased about it. :)

Sis. Claborn (right) and Sis. Hurst (middle).

What a hard worker Sis. Claborn was too. She has a servant’s heart. I enjoyed working with these two ladies very much. Love you guys! :D

Here’s the entrance to the Hospitality Tent.

Inside the tent (below).

First, look at the photo below of Bro. Christian, then I’ll tell the story about it.

There were a lot of people who came to eat dinner on Thursday night, so most of the food was gone by the time Bro. Christian came in. In fact, he came so late, that we had run out of plates. There was just enough food for him, but nothing to put it in for him to eat, so… We just put the chicken, rice, sauce and veggies in a serving tray for him and presented it as a “very special dish for a very special person”. It was very funny and he was such a good sport about it. When he picked up the dish for the photo, it slid to the other side. He was so funny. Well, you just had to be there, I guess. :D

Bro. and Sis. Howard ran the snack bar this year and did a wonderful job making some yummy snacks like: Biscuits and gravy and Funnel Cake! Mmmmmmm good! :D

Here’s Sis. Howard putting sugar on her Famous Funnel Cake. It was DELICIOUS!

Here’s Bro. Howard helping customers. They worked so hard all week and always had a smile on their face and an encouraging word. I love you guys! You are awesome!

Another exciting thing about Camp Meeting was meeting some of my blogging buddies! I already knew most of those who I saw, but giving them a hug after not seeing them in a long time was great! I got to see, Shirley Buxton, Karen Hopper, Jana Allard, Debbie Saiz, and for the first time ever, I met Catherine Roseberry Meyer! Catherine, you are so beautiful and sweet and I’m so glad I met you in person. Here’s a pic of us:

Well, that’s it for my Camp Meeting postings. Hope they encouraged you to attend next year if you’ve never been. It’s one of those things you must experience for yourself to see how great it is. Hope to see you there!

Before I end, I want to say to Bro. Steve and Sis. Debbie Saiz: You two did an outstanding job running the Camp Meeting! My husband and I want you to know that we appreciate you and all your work and sacrifice so very, very much. I know God will bless you for a job well done.

In case you haven’t seen enough Camp Meeting photos here and on other blogs, I have more! You can see them if you click here on Flickr Photos. Enjoy! :)

  • I am just loving your posts. Oh, the pictures are reflections of the great week we had. I never did get to meet Catherine (and certainly would have loved to). However, I enjoyed seeing and meeting the fellow bloggers that I was able to.

So glad you are enjoying my posts. :)

  • I agree Sis. Hurst is awesome at hospitality. I’m so glad you took these pictures. There are so many aspects to Camp Meeting that it is hard to capture all of it. I was hoping someone got Bro. Christians’ plate (trough – as he called it), that was too good. You all will do great again next year!

Yes! He called it his tough! Ha! Ha! I had forgotten that! He was so funny. Little things like this just add up to all the fun and good times at Camp Meeting.

  • Tena, this is a great post. The pictures are wonderful…makes me want to run right back to camp meeting.

Can you believe I have never been in the hospitality tent? It surely looks beautiful.

Thanks to Sister Hurst and Sister Claborn and everyone who worked so hard to minister to the special people of the district.

    Love everybody!!!

  • Sis Tena, the series on Camp Meeting is great.

Thank you for the compliments. Let me tell you you and your husband make a darling couple. You are still like the “youngens” in your wedding pictures, sparkling eyes and all!

    Love you!

  • Tena, Great photos!! Thanks for sharing. . . .you got some great ones that I did not. You have a right to brag on your pastor’s wife! A great lady! She was the first pick for the job!! Sis. Jeri Ann Guidroz can be VERY proud of her. Sis. Hurst helped with the Texas hospitality for years. . .I had seen theirs and knew what we did in Louisiana. . . .she brought southern hospitality and made it California style. . . . VERY CLASSY & THE BEST!!!! Now she is training others! Kinda neat how that works! This year, Sis. Donna Claiborne added her southern California touch working along beside Sis. Hurst. Thanks for all of your help in working with these two great ladies as well. . .you and your husband. . . .Danelle & Matt, and all of the Minister’s wives who helped run it. It was a nice place for our District officials and guests to gather!

  • With all these posts here (and on other’s blogs) I feel like I went to camp with y’all!! :)

    That funnel cake looks GOOD!!

  • Tena,
Just got home from a day with Gene, Karla and the boys in San Francisco. My! You brought tears to my eyes. I really don’t know what to say except, Thank You. You are very kind in your compliments. Of course, you know that I could not have done it all by myself. Thank you again for your help and all the others. Looking forward to next year. :) Love you!
